TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. BACKGROUND CHECKS:
    1. A background check is not required.
  2. ELIGIBILITY
    1. Be a currently enrolled, undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full-time (12 credit hours) sophomore, junior or senior in the fall of 2019.
    2. Submit written enrollment verification from their college or university confirming the student’s enrollment status to Iowa Campus Compact (student ID cards and/or phone calls are not sufficient documentation).
    3. Ability to attend Illinois Campus Compact orientation and three professional development days throughout the internship.
  3. WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS
    1. This 25 hours/week position runs 8 weeks long and tentative start date is June 3, 2019 and ending Friday, July 26, 2019
    2. This position is not eligible for sick, vacation, and holiday leave during employment.
    3. The position will primarily between Monday – Friday from 8am – 4pm with occasional evening and weekend hours. The position is located on an urban farm and assisting with tours, volunteer groups, and in the learning garden is part of the role. The position requires the ability to move safely over uneven terrain, light lifting, and the ability to see, hear, and respond to people.
  4. BENEFITS
    1. The individual shall receive a $13/hour before taxes and it will be distributed bi-weekly for the duration of the internship.
    2. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Illinois Campus Compact will provide an in-person orientation and three mandatory professional development opportunities to the employee.
    3. The intern will have access to free farm fresh produce when available.
  5. EVALUATIONS
    1. The intern will receive an evaluation of their performance at the end of their internship from their direct supervisor. The evaluation also includes a self-evaluation and program evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. POSITION PURPOSE
    1. The intern will work on the Community Engagement team, focusing on assisting in ongoing projects of the department including but not limited to: weekly cooking demonstrations, a learning garden to engage K-12 youth, leading tours, and tabling and other outreach events at the farm and throughout the community.
  1. DUTIES
    1. Assist in preparation of events held at the farm, such as cooking demonstrations, tours, and volunteer days
    2. Assist in data collection at farm events and data entry when necessary
    3. Assist in maintaining a “Learning Garden” section of the farm
    4. Assist in representing Growing Home while canvassing, tabling, and at community events
    5. Completes basic office support tasks
  1. COMMUNITY IMPACT
    1. The student will enable the department to host and attend more events. This will bring greater awareness of the farm and the resources we offer.

  1. Commitment to learning about the mission of Growing Home and the greater Englewood neighborhood
  2. Ability to interact with guests with a pleasant and positive attitude
  3. Interest in food justice, urban farming, and/or community engagement
  4. The ability to be flexible, work independently, and problem-solve
  5. Strong computer skills

  1. CAREER DEVELOPMENT
    1. Understand the operations of small non-profit
    2. Learn about food justice work
    3. Work with and learn from community engagement professionals
    4. Gain experience in event planning
  2. SKILL DEVELOPMENT
    1. The student will learn time management and prioritization in a fast paced environment with a variety of projects. They will gain skills in public speaking while leading tours and volunteer groups.
  3. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
    1. The student will learn about healthy eating and growing while being on a USDA certified Organic farm. They will gain confidence through working on independent projects.
