An open letter to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel from the Englewood Railway Coalition regarding Norfolk Southern Corp.’s (NSC) attempted hostile takeover of Black-owned homes in Englewood. NSC, a $34.5 billion Virginia-based corporation, is trying to expand a massive freight yard in our neighborhood. The project, which amounts to a land grab of some 84 acres, would destroy the homes, history and traditions of this long-established African-American community.

Service Learning Hours offered to High School Students

Chicago film producer Kenya Renee is offering service learning hours to high school students.  Students can gain up to 20 hours per week acting as online marketing interns spreading the word about the upcoming film "Deacon's Choice" via social media sites.

This movie was written by Chicago's very own Kenya Renee and Illinois native Dan Hoger.  The movie stars some of Chicago's best talent:  Eugene Parker, Bridgette Shorter, Shannon Matesky, Elizabeth Gray, Byron Willis and many more.

"Deacon’s Choice” is described as a powerful story of an Ex-Chicago Politician and his family’s tug-of-war battle to overcome a secret that has lain dormant for 30 years. It embodies the trickle effect of selfishness, cover-ups, addiction and consequence that has chipped away one young lady’s heart, passion and esteem.

One would assume the film’s name derived from a religious title, but this twin story explains one young lady’s journeys through life, evoking the inner landscape of her longing to connect to love and feeling loved. In the soon to be 2014 released film "Deacon's Choice", Deacon Shields, a high school teacher, journalist and daughter of a high powered Chicago Public Official  initiates the establishment of her existence through her writings.

Deacon’s Choice uniquely illustrates parallel stories that are parables of happiness gloriously found and tragically lost linked by Chicago political hierarchy and her rollercoaster ride through addiction causing their once solid family relationship to slowly chip away by this long-lived façade.

The intensity of this film is just as stimulating as “Requiem for a Dream” & “Precious” yet its cultured like the movie “Fire Proof.” This compulsive tale of a family’s secret reminds us that life for each of us has its own individual journey.
