National Green the Church Conference Comes to Chicago and Englewood

BLACK CHURCHES STAND UP FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF COMMUNITIES IN CHICAGO WITH NATIONAL GREEN THE CHURCH SUMMIT THIS WEEK

CHICAGO. August 15, 2015. Hundreds of pastors, faith-based community leaders and others from across the country are expected to attend the Green the Church Chicago Summit taking place August 19th - 21st at Trinity United Church of Christ, 400 W 95th Street. The summit is a collaboration between the national non for profit Green for All, Chicago based organization Faith In Place and Trinity United Church of Christ. The conference includes three days of worship, lectures and discussions designed to make churches and organizations more aware of and to get them more involved in issues related to the environment, sustainability and the green economy for the betterment of black communities.

This is the first conference of this kind to come to Chicago and the first collaborative effort to unite and empower churches to be more environmentally focused for the sake of their congregations as well as the communities they serve. “As people of faith, we know that we have a sacred duty to be good stewards of the planet and to care for our brothers and sisters in need, who are often the people most impacted by climate and change,” says Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor, Trinity United Church of Christ.

The 3 day conference will kick off on Wednesday with a resource fair featuring green vendors and some of the city's best organizations dedicated to green efforts as well as a worship service featuring AME Bishop Vashti McKenzie and Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III. The second day features a day full of workshops and panel discussions on topics including; funding green projects, understanding food justice, expanding opportunities in the green economy and preparing churches to be resilient in times of disaster. On Friday, participants will take a tour that boasts some of Chicago’s best green initiatives, including several stops in Greater Englewood to learn about Urban Agriculture &  Community Outreach efforts there.

The Green the Church Chicago Summit is free and open to all.

Featured speakers include: Bishop Vashti McKenzie, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Dr. Brad Braxton, Rev. Booker Vance, Rev. Dr. Lance Watson, Rev. Gerald Durley

Attendees will enjoy a music performance by Walt Whitman and The Soul Children of Chicago!
