Advocate Trinity Hospital Receives Greenhealth Award

The benefits of Advocate Trinity Hospital’s recently-renovated front lobby extend beyond the aesthetics for patients and guests who enter through the hospital’s East 93rd Street entrance – anyone who enjoys cleaner air can feel good about this hospital investment.

In fact, the hospital’s commitment to environmental excellence has been recognized by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care.

Advocate Trinity Hospital earned Practice Greenhealth’s Emerald Award, presented annually to honor the environmental sustainability achievements of health care facilities that are setting the standard in eliminating mercury, reducing and recycling waste and sustainable sourcing, among other achievements. Furniture purchased as part of the remodel was free of five key groups of chemicals that have human and environmental health risks – a key highlight of Advocate Trinity’s environmental stewardship work in 2017.

“Our desire to build a healthier community calls for us to focus on health outcomes, as well as clean air and water, which ultimately impacts the health of our surrounding area,” said Dan Doherty, vice president, Advocate Trinity Operations. “We are reducing our environmental impact by paying attention to new construction materials and our recycling practices, as well as actively looking for opportunities to conserve energy.”

Winning hospitals have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and shown leadership in the local community and in the health care sector. Advocate Trinity was among eleven Advocate hospitals to receive individual recognition from the non-profit.

For the 10th straight year, Advocate Health Care received Practice Greenhealth’s System for Change Award, which honors health care systems working to reduce energy use, increase recycling, establish green building practices and set and meet other goals related to sustainability. The system’s decade-long record of recognition represents the longest active streak in the United States.

“To be named among the nation’s sustainability leaders is a direct reflection of our team members’ dedication to responsible stewardship of our resources,” said Al Manshum, senior vice president, operations integration.
