Registration Underway for Spring 2017 Semester at City Colleges of Chicago

Now is the time to register for Spring 2017 semester classes at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC). The first session of Spring classes (16-week session) begins on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 and registration ends on Tuesday, January 10, 2016.

New students can apply to City Colleges of Chicago by visiting the admissions page at www.ccc.edu/apply. Offering quality, affordable programs, City Colleges of Chicago allows students to earn academic credentials ranging from certificates and associate degrees in fast-growing fields to English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED high school equivalency instruction.

“City Colleges offers the academic pathways that can bring our students’ closer to their educational and career goals,” said City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl L. Hyman.  “Whether they want to transfer to a four-year college or university, or advance their career in a high demand field, City Colleges gives students the education, tools and training to succeed.”

City Colleges partners with employers and 4-year universities through its College to Careers program to ensure students are prepared to seize the more than 600,000 jobs coming to the Chicago region in fields, including: health sciences; business; advanced manufacturing; construction technology; education, human, and natural sciences; culinary/hospitality; information technology; and transportation/distribution/logistics.

Employers and 4-year universities review curriculum and facilities, act as teacher/practitioners in the classroom, and offer students a first pass at internships and job interviews.

Olive-Harvey College, City Colleges’ Center of Excellence in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TD &L) education, has partnered with Fed Ex and UPS in designing curriculum and providing training for the Commercial Driver License (CDL) – C Driver Trainer Program, new for the Spring 2017 semester. This course will prepare give students additional job opportunities with the commercial (class C) licensure.

For students interested in obtaining the English as a Second Language endorsement, Truman College is offering two new courses for Spring 2017: Linguistics 101 and Linguistics 102.

Attending City Colleges can save students thousands of dollars towards a bachelor’s degree. Chicago-area students who spend their first two years at City Colleges can save up to $40,000 towards their bachelor’s degree compared to what it may cost to attend a four-year institution.

Courses labeled “IAI” in the City Colleges academic catalog have been approved by the Illinois Articulation Initiative and will transfer to the more than 100 Illinois colleges and universities participating in IAI.

City Colleges of Chicago also offers the Chicago Star Scholarship, which provides free tuition and books for up to three years, to eligible graduates of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and CPS charter schools.

Now in its second year, the Chicago Star Scholarship program is helping nearly 2,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) graduates attend college tuition-free – a 20 percent increase in new scholars between 2015 and 2016.  Students who qualified for the Star Scholarship, but chose not to attend City Colleges this past Fall, are still eligible to receive benefits.

CPS students must meet specific criteria to be chosen as Star Scholars. These students must graduate with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, they must demonstrate “completion ready” ability with an ACT math and English score of 17 or an SAT math score or 400 and SAT writing score of 410, and the student must enroll in one of CCC’s structured, relevant pathways. Students meeting these criteria will be offered waivers for all tuition and books for up to three years at City Colleges of Chicago or upon completion of their degree, whichever happens first.

The Chicago Star Scholarship program features partnerships with 15 four-year colleges and universities. Each of these partners have committed to creating an opportunity that will allow Star Scholars to continue their college education following a successful completion at CCC, with wraparound supports to ensure a successful transfer. These packages range in monetary value between $2,500 and nearly $50,000 each year, and include some of the top colleges state- and nationwide. More information about the Chicago Star Scholarship and Star Partners can be found at www.ccc.edu/starscholarship.

Students in need of childcare can explore City Colleges’ state-licensed Child Development Schools, offering high-quality full- and part-time childcare to City Colleges students, faculty and staff. Some childcare services may be free (based on eligibility) and special needs care is available. Child Development Schools are available at Daley College (main campus and Arturo Velasquez Institute), Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, and Truman College.
