Public Newsroom #17: "Who Tells the Story of Englewood" with City Bureau and Englewood-based photographer Tonika Johnson

See bigger map

On May 11, Woodlawn-based civic journalism lab City Bureau will have Englewood-based photographer Tonika Johnson in for Public Newsroom #17, a workshop and discussion on photography, overcoming neighborhood stigmas and defining what we mean when we talk about "narrative shifting" in Chicago.

Tonika is a photographer from the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. She received her BA in Journalism & Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2003 and her MBA from National-Louis University in 2005. Her current and ongoing photography project, "From the INside," seeks to challenge negative perceptions of Englewood by creating images of vibrancy, normalcy and everday life from her "insider" perspective.

Tonika will lead a conversation on how media can better provide platforms for communities to tell their own story and how an "insider" perspective can be shared and taught through empathy, understanding and dialogue while guiding Public Newsrrom guests through selections from her body of work.

The Public Newsroom is always free and always open to the public thanks to your support. Youth and communities interested in storytelling, media, art and civic engagement are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
